The owners of this house required a holiday home where they could enjoy the best of outdoor living and appreciate the views and sun from within their living and entertaining spaces. It was important to create a home which offered them both formal and informal areas, as well as creating a home that engaged with the surroundings.
Set in picturesque Mapua near Nelson, the gently sloping site faces south towards the harbour and mountains beyond. Courtyards are positioned to capture sunlight and views. The form of the roof and the house’s relationship to the land is informed by the natural contour of the site itself and the gentle topography beyond.
The living spaces of the house are designed to transition easily from indoor to outdoor spaces, offering a mix of cosy intimate spaces and spacious entertaining areas. Connections between the rooms and the courtyard and to the landscape beyond provide a strong sense of place. The jury from the NZIA New Zealand Award for Architecture commented: “Very refined design and execution distinguish this holiday home providing for a rich spectrum of indoor outdoor experiences”.
