ECC is a company that has since 1909, consistently been ahead of the times.  Dealing  with high quality design has required a unique backdrop to present its wares, something  with flexibility to accommodate their ever changing needs.  From the humble beginnings  of a lift company workshop in 1972 the building has been amended on numerous occasions.  The most recent being the small addition to provide a more substantive  entry from the rear carpark, housing their exterior products.

Conceptually the new addition provides a space where furniture is displayed in an  outdoor setting, whilst still being protected from the weather. The resultant structure is one of minimal intrusion and maximum flexibility.  The large cantilevering timber grille is lightly connected to the ground providing a base from which the waterproofing  translucent polycarbonate roof element over is attached.  The balustrades are  constructed of sustainably grown yellow cedar with concrete pavers to the floor and  bluestone treads.  Coordinated into this are all the services (fire and lighting), with carefi; attention to detail to ensure the resultant witing and fittings remain unobtrusive.

The balustrading and planting define the space, creates a soft landscaped setting within this highly built up commercial area.  Viewed from the interior of the building the high ceiling height accentuates the entry whilst providing a generous space extending the interior out into the furniture display.

Used primarily as ECC’s exterior display room, the canopy area doubles as a social space during the warm balmy Auckland evenings.  The addition has allowed the company to provide an inviting display area and entry that sits as a backdrop to the business of supplying high end design products. This has been an exercise to create a memorable room whilst maintaining a backdrop of simplicity and functionality.
