Capital and Coast District Health Board's existing youth mental health facility is part of the established Kenepuru public hospital in Porirua.

CCM Architects were commissioned to design a new additional third unit Nga Taiohi Youth Forensic Unit at Kenepuru.

The scheme involves a new extension to the south-east of the existing buildings, with internal links to the existing buildings enabling sharing of common spaces such as classrooms, interview spaces and an all-weather gymnasium.

This facility will play a unique role in providing national mental health services for some of the most critical youth mental health clients in New Zealand.  This project required fast-track design and building processes, and demands robust materials and security appropriate to the level of care required for these clients.

The project consists of the following components:

  • Whanau Admissions Room
  • Six bed Youth Forensic wing
  • Two bed Youth Female wing
  • Two bed Admissions wing
  • Lounges, dining, kitchens and ablutions areas
  • Staff base, treatment room, staff facilities
  • Shared Education Classrooms
  • Shared Occupational Therapy rooms
  • Interview and therapy spaces
  • Sensory Modulation Room
  • An all-weather gymnasium
  • Secure outdoor courtyards
  • Covered links from the existing buildings
